Autumn Garden Maintenance in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire
Autumn brings falling leaves, shorter days and changing weather. Some gardens still need regular mowing and weeding, while others are ready for a seasonal tidy-up. The right approach depends on your plants and the ground conditions.
At Whites Gardening Services, we offer regular garden maintenance and one-off autumn tidy-ups across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
Clear fallen leaves from lawns and paths
Remove accumulations of fallen leaves from lawns so they don’t block light and smother the grass. Keep paths and steps clear too, as wet leaves can make surfaces slippery.
Collected leaves can be used to make leaf mould. Some leaves can also be left beneath hedges and in undisturbed corners to provide shelter for wildlife.
Mow according to growth and conditions
Grass can continue growing during mild autumn weather, so mowing may still be needed. Adjust the frequency to how quickly your lawn grows rather than stopping on a fixed date.
For an ordinary garden lawn, a slightly higher cut than in summer is usually appropriate. Avoid removing more than one-third of the grass height in a single cut.
Wait until the grass is dry and frost-free, and avoid mowing when the ground is waterlogged, frozen or too soft to support the mower without damage.
Tidy borders without cutting everything back
Remove weeds and selectively tidy collapsed growth that is obstructing paths or neighbouring plants.
Many herbaceous perennials can be left standing over winter. Seed heads can provide food for birds, while stems offer shelter for wildlife and add structure to the garden.
The best time to cut back depends on the plant. Diseased material may need removing rather than leaving it over winter.
Check before pruning shrubs and hedges
Autumn is not the right time to prune every shrub or hedge. Timing depends on the species, its flowering habit and whether you are giving it a light trim or carrying out a substantial reduction.
For example, many spring-flowering shrubs form their flower buds on existing growth. Cutting them back in autumn can remove the following spring’s flowers.
Identify the plant and check the appropriate pruning time before starting.
Plan suitable autumn planting
Autumn can be a good time to plant many hardy trees, shrubs and perennials, provided the plants suit the location and the soil conditions are suitable.
Delay planting if the ground is frozen or waterlogged. Newly planted areas still need monitoring and watering during dry spells, even in autumn.
It is also a useful time to assess gaps in borders or sections of hedge that need replacing.
