Creating a Silver Merit Show Garden at BBC Gardeners’ World Live

One of the proudest moments in my horticultural career was helping to create a show garden for BBC Gardeners’ World Live as part of my Practical Horticulture Level 3 course.

It was an incredible opportunity to put our horticultural knowledge into practice at one of the country’s best-known gardening events. After all the planning, preparation and physical work involved, our finished garden was awarded a Silver Merit.

From a Plan to a Finished Show Garden

Creating a show garden involves much more than placing a few attractive plants into the ground. Every detail needs to work together, from the layout and structure to the planting combinations and final presentation.

As a group, we worked together to transform the original design into a completed garden ready to be judged and viewed by visitors.

The project involved:

  • Preparing and constructing the garden

  • Positioning plants accurately

  • Creating attractive planting combinations

  • Making sure the different elements worked together

  • Completing the final presentation to a high standard

  • Working carefully as a team within a limited timeframe

It was demanding work, but seeing the garden take shape made the effort worthwhile.

Careful Planting and Attention to Detail

Show gardens are viewed at close range, so the smallest details can make a noticeable difference. Plants need to be positioned carefully to create the right balance of colour, height, texture and structure.

The garden also needed to look established and complete from the moment it opened, rather than appearing newly planted.

Working on the project helped strengthen my understanding of planting design and showed how thoughtful plant selection can completely change the appearance and atmosphere of an outdoor space.

Receiving a Silver Merit

Receiving a Silver Merit was a fantastic achievement for everyone involved. It recognised the planning, practical skill and teamwork that went into creating the finished garden.

Being part of a project judged at BBC Gardeners’ World Live was a valuable experience and something I remain extremely proud of.

It gave me the opportunity to work to show-garden standards while continuing to develop my practical horticultural knowledge.

Bringing That Experience to Customers’ Gardens

Although a domestic garden is different from a temporary show garden, many of the same principles still apply.

Good preparation, suitable plant choices and attention to detail are all essential when creating attractive borders and well-maintained outdoor spaces.

I now bring that experience to my work at Whites Gardening Services, whether I am maintaining an established garden, improving a border, pruning plants or helping a customer plan new planting.
